Exercise Across America Challenge

I have recently decided to challenge myself. I am training for a half-marathon and then once, I accomplish that distance, I will attempt the full marathon. Playing collegiate sports, I used to look at running as a punishment for playing poorly or losing a game. But, as I’ve gotten older and no longer in the sports arena, I felt I needed a new motivation to continually push myself to be better. Continue reading

Can Babies Be Allergic to Breastmilk?

In a previous post, food allergies in babies was discussed. Now, this post made me think about whether an infant could possibly be allergic to their mother’s breastmilk. So, I did a little research and this is what I found.

It is not possible for your baby to be allergic to your breastmilk. However, certain foods that are eaten could have an adverse effect on the baby, which may make it look like a slight allergic reaction.

Food that you eat will rarely cause an issue for your nursing baby. Even foods that may normally create issues in our digestion, like beans, spices, cabbages, citrus and other common allergens will almost never have an effect on the baby.

So what is a food that may cause an issue?

Dairy protein is the most common food source of gassiness and fussiness. The symptoms of an intolerance to dairy protein will be very similar to those of a regular allergy. These include diarrhea, rash, fussiness, gas, runny nose, cough or congestion. If you do notice any of these symptoms while breastfeeding, try cutting out on all dairy products for at least 2 weeks. Dairy products include milk, cheese, yogurt, and butter. If there’s an improvement, then you know this was the source of the issue.

One other characteristic that needs to be learned is whether your baby has allergies or not. It’s beneficial to know the signs of an allergic reaction, what to do if you think your baby is having an allergic reaction and whether allergies may be preventable. Continue reading
